Community Support Handbook

Community Development Workers (CDWs)

The introduction of professional and qualified CDWs is a major step forward in our ability to provide the RAF community with a range of social care options. Where deployed the CDWs have already taken great strides forward in forging closer links with local authorities and communities to the benefit of the RAF community they represent. Why is this important? It is simply that the RAF has now realised that its communities' do not exist in a vacuum and that it is in our interests to build stronger ties with those around us. This is particularly true, for example, of schooling and youth work.

It is self-evident that the RAF cannot possibly provide every aspect of social support for a modern, diverse and widely dispersed community. It is the CDWs task to actively network on our behalf to ensure that we have access to all the support we are entitled to at local authority level and to ensure that functionally, at station level, we are operating in a way that complies with best practice, government guidelines and promotes a stronger sense of community and well-being.
