What Causes Stress?

Stress occurs when pressures exceed an individual's ability to cope. Anyone who experiences too much pressure at work and/or at home will be stressed.

The following pressures at work may lead to stress:
  • Inadequate training, equipment or resources.
  • Unachievable workload within the given time-frame.
  • Lack of control over the workload.
  • Lack of variety in the work leading to boredom.
  • Being unaware of the reason for carrying out the work.
  • Mental and physical exhaustion due to lack of time away form the work environment.
  • Unrealistic expectations of an individual's capability.
  • Absence of opportunities for individuals to voice their concerns.
  • Not being valued as a team member or as an individual.
