What is Stress?
"Pressure itself should be seen as a normal aspect of life. In many cases it is beneficial; it adds challenge and excitement and provides the stimulus to succeed."
"Pressure is only a problem if it is excessive, poorly managed and consequently leads to regular or prolonged stress."
- Stress is the reaction to excessive pressures which result in a reduced performance.
- Everyone of every rank is subjected to varying degrees of pressure; those that handle it well will be less prone to stress, buy anyone can be overloaded.
- Recruits make the greatest progress in learning to cope with stress but are particularly vulnerable to its effects.
- Individuals will usually recover from stress if it is of a short duration.
- Prolonged stress will result in reduced performance and/or ill health.
- Sudden massive or overwhelming pressure can result in acute reactions such as Battleshock and Traumatic Stress Reactions. These are not covered in this booklet.
