Mutual Support - The Armed Forces Multiple Sclerosis Support Group
Mutual Support is a Tri-Service MS Group which has been formed to act as a centre for Support, Information and Advice for any personnel irrespective of Rank/Grade who have an association with Multiple Sclerosis.
Since its conception with just three members, Mutual Support has grown and now the membership comprising of both retired and serving personnel, exceeds 226. The aim of the Group is exactly as the name implies, to provide Mutual Support to its membership. We are recognized by the MS Society UK and have charitable status under its umbrella. We work closely with the MS Society UK in furthering its aims, whilst it also provides advice and support to our Group. Our Welfare team extends throughout the UK and offers support to the individual from the moment of diagnosis. Statistics and averages suggest that there may be as many as 150 servicemen and women diagnosed with MS, who are still not in touch with Mutual Support. Admitting you have MS is very difficult; there is a natural reluctance to acknowledge that your career may be in jeopardy and the future uncertain. The first days and weeks after diagnosis can be critical and that is where Mutual Support can offer the greatest support. Our members are treading or have trodden the path that all newly diagnosed must follow and their experiences and advice can offer much advice, comfort and information. This alone can allay many of the fears and anxieties of those newly diagnosed.
Membership of Mutual Support is open to serving and former members of the Armed Forces or Reserves. Dependants and carers are also welcome, as are other Service personnel who would like to help. If you need our help and support please make contact with our Welfare Co-ordinator.
