Are You Thinking Of Adoption?
Adopting a child can be one of the most rewarding experiences for both the parents and the child. Indeed, for many children, adoption could be their best chance of ensuring a good start in life. You may want to adopt, but feel that being from a service background will provide an obstacle to your chances of succeeding. There is no reason why you should be excluded from the adoption process and SSAFA Forces Help has approved many families in the UK and overseas. Since 2000 53 children have been placed with Service families.

SSAFA Forces Help is an approved voluntary adoption agency. It has specialist adoption social workers in the UK as well as in British Forces Germany. Social workers from the RAF (UK) Social Work Service and the Personal Welfare Services in Northern Ireland and Cyprus and Gibraltar also carry out some adoption work.

SSAFA Forces Help believes that service families have a great deal to offer children in need of a permanent home and are looking for suitable prospective adopters who can take children of varying ages and numbers. Assessment will be made by SSAFA Forces Help's social workers who understand the unique lifestyle and qualities offered by families in the services. Families should be aware that if they are thinking about adoption, babies are rarely available in the United Kingdom or within the service community and that most children in need of adoption are older and will have experienced many difficulties. Such children can present a challenge to parents which SSAFA Forces Help believes service families can meet.

  • For many parents who have adopted it can be a happy experience, but for some it can present difficulties.

  • That is why you need to be 100% sure you want to adopt
Service families do have a great deal to offer a child in need of a permanent home, and their experience in managing change in family life can be very useful. Adopting a child is not easy, but can bring enormous rewards. If you would like to find out more information about adopting a child with SSAFA Forces Help and other services offered to the serving and ex-service community you can approach your personal and family support worker or for adoption information contact the Adoption Administrator.
