Why do I need to use a service number to gain access, particularly when I'm not in the RAF; I'm merely the partner/parent/dependant of someone who is?
When the site was being developed it became obvious that there needed to be some form a barrier to deter malicious individuals from spoiling the facility for everyone else. At the same time however, we faced the issue of ensuring that as many members of the wider RAF community as possible could gain access. After much deliberation, it was felt that using a service number as an identifier was the simplest and most effective method of ensuring that legitimate users could gain access to a safe and friendly facility. It also meant that we could trace all participants. While nicknames are welcome, the service number check makes it difficult for anyone trying to abuse the system anonymously -

What other protective systems are in place?
The chatroom and bulletin boards are continually monitored to ensure that no one abuses the facility by trying to include inappropriate material. This is done in two ways. First, the Webmaster constantly watches for potentially inappropriate material; should something be found it will be removed and follow-up actions will take place. This is where the use of the service number becomes significant. Second, the website uses editorial software that is designed to automatically remove offensive language and phrases. It is also worth stating that the rules of the facility are written to ensure that potential facility abusers clearly know that they will be removed immediately.
I just want to chat with a particular group, can you help?
We are well aware of this as an issue and are ready and able to help those who have a genuine need. Recently, HIVE personnel asked if we could provide them with a dedicated chatroom and bulletin board system: this was done both easily and quickly using the normal protective systems. The potential for this form of support is enormous and should any other legitimate identifiable group wish to have a similar facility, please contact the Webmaster who will bring it to the attention of the Community Support staffs for a decision.
