RAF Active Magazine
Created in 1999 by Sqn Ldr Ron Salmon to promote sport and adventurous activities throughout the Service, RAF Active is distributed to all locations in the World where RAF personnel work. The Magazine reports on the exploits of RAF people on the sports field, in the Gymnasium, out in the countryside and up in the mountains, on and under the seas, and in the air. Expeditions taking part in every corner of the World are brought to life by skilled authors and excellent photographs - many taken by RAF professional photographers. The Magazine is sound evidence of the huge participation in sports and adventurous activities and illustrates the values of such ventures for personal development. Young airmen and airwomen develop the confidence and skills needed for promotion to NCO rank, as well as to look after themselves in the World. NCOs gain the confidence and leadership skills that may take them into Senior status or prepare them for Commissioning. The discipline and determination learnt in the gymnasium and on the sports pitch reads across into home life and into the working environment, with many a sporting individual excelling at their primary duty. The fitness gained from participating in physical pursuits creates a sound base for life, with surplus energy being available for many other activities. Maintaining fitness into middle and old age allows people to make more of their lives for longer. The old saying of "use it or lose it" is certainly true when talking about muscle and flexibility. The less one partakes in physical work, the less capable that person's body is of partaking - it can be a downward spiral. Whether you're keen on active pastimes or not, there are some great reports on the exploits of RAF people: from trekking in Nepal to climbing Kilimanjaro, scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef to sailing around Scotland, Micro-lighting in Alaska to paragliding in the Alps, Kart racing at Milton Keynes to Superbike racing with the world champions at Silverstone. There's something for everyone. Website: http://www.rafactive.co.uk/
