Home Start
Home Start is a low level welfare and befriending service, targeted at helping the younger, more inexperienced mothers and families. Home Start organisers aim to give confidential, non-professional assistance on a practical level, such as baby-sitting and home-care to young families. At present MOD only fund organisations overseas although the scheme originated in the UK civilian community and is still available from Local Authorities.
The Work of Home Start
Parenting is arguably the most demanding and important task that anyone can undertake. Without a supportive extended family who are able to help or a friendly and caring community, the demands can become just too much particularly when compounded by other stresses and problems. Home Start, the leading family support organisation in the UK, gives hope to families. Our simple approach is to offer the support of one volunteer parent to another parent who is facing difficulties and has at least one child under five. The volunteer's ability to offer friendship, practical help and support enables families to cope with the pressures they are facing and can often be enough to reduce the potential for family breakdown and child abuse.

The national organisation of Home Start provides policy, training, information, guidance, quality assurance and support to Home-Start schemes across the UK and with British Forces in Germany and Cyprus.
It is so good to have someone I can call a friend. I wish there were more people like her about. She was even there when I had my fourth child - in the delivery room with me all the way. I don't think I could have gone through the lot if it wasn't for Sue.
