Children with Special Needs

If your child is handicapped or has Special Needs (SEN), he or she may require special or extra provision. Children's Education Advisory Service (CEAS) has a Special Needs Section whose task is to provide advice and support for Service parents of all SEN children. The address and telephone number is as above. The service includes advice on special needs (SEN) provision overseas and in the UK, authority for the grant of Special Needs Allowance (SENA) (in cases where parents have to pay towards the cost of boarding school) and liaison between local authorities and the posting branches. CEAS also arranges for escorts from the British Red Cross to accompany SEN children if they travel to or from overseas on school holidays.

It is important to register your child with CEAS if he/she has special needs. CEAS can then advise on the facilities for SEN children overseas and also help families obtain essential resources from LEAs when they are serving in the UK. However, if a child arrives overseas with a type or level of SEN which cannot be provided for, it is probable that the family will be returned to the UK. This unnecessary inconvenience can be easily avoided if the child is registered because the family, the posting authority and the schools, can discuss the child's needs to arrive at an effective solution which should have no detrimental effect upon the Serviceman's career. All discussions take place in the strictest confidence.
