Kidscape
Kidscape is the registered charity committed to keeping children safe from harm or abuse. Kidscape is the only national children's charity which focuses upon preventative policies - tactics to use before any abuse takes place. Kidscape has practical, easy to use material for children, parents, teachers, social workers, police and community workers. Kidscape works to keep children safe. And Kidscape works.
"I was shy and clever. I liked music and wasn't very good at sports. My classmates thought I was a good target. They made fun of me, called me a swot, spat on my lunch, tore my clothes and kicked and punched me whenever they got the chance. I am 68 years old, yet those years of bullying have left me frustrated, angry and with no self-esteem. I wish Kidscape had been around then - maybe you could have helped."
This was just one extract from the questionnaires we have received from adults who were bullied as children. The National Lottery has given us a grant to establish the long term effects of bullying. The response has been overwhelming, exciting and desperately sad. Overwhelming because of the tremendous response we have had. We expected a few hundred participants - we'll have over 1000. Exciting because this study will give the true picture of bullying in years past, something that has never been done before. Sad because the comments are so heartbreaking. If anyone says to me again that bullying is "just a necessary and normal part of growing up", you may have to hold me back.
